Introducing Contact Improvisation

Posted by Sojournalist

Contact Improvisation (CI) is a dance technique in which points of physical contact provide the starting point for movement improvisation and exploration. Contact Improvisation is a form of dance improvisation and is one of the best-known and most characteristic forms of postmodern dance. CI performances are often called “jams” and incorporate many other modalities, including but not limited to: akido, feldenkrais, laban movement analysis, yoga, and tango….and so much more.

The beauty of CI is that one can start using it for fun, fitness, and social connections almost without any long-term or complicated training. It is not at all uncommon in CI to watch a small woman balance or seemingly lift a very large man effortlessly and without injury or strain.

Truly, CI is poetry in motion.  It is as soothing and entertaining to watch as it is fun, healing, and transformative to do.

  1. I ended up at a Contact Improvisation event about a year ago and went away really excited about it. Everyone should try this, especially couples.
